MORTON boss Dougie Imrie claims it'd be a 'travesty' if Inverness were to be relegated - but his side will be going all out for a win against them which could pave the way for it to happen.

The Greenock gaffer takes his side to the Highlands on Friday looking for a victory that would seal a fifth-placed finish in the Championship.

It would also consign Duncan Ferguson's team to the League One play-offs, and while ex-Caley man Imrie feels for them he is more concerned about his own team.

He told the Tele: "We've got a tough game ahead of us now to finish off the season. But it's still within our own hands to go and finish in fifth.

"There's a lot at stake now in the game, Queen's Park have gone above Inverness and that means that Inverness will be fighting for their lives to get out of that ninth position when we go there.

"They'll know what's at stake. Our full focus is to go there and win because we need to do that to finish in fifth place. At the end of the day, I've got a job to do, there will be no sentiment there when it comes to the game on Friday night.

"I think it would have a massive detrimental impact on Inverness if they were to go down.

"You see the news doing the rounds that they're looking to get money in from sponsors according to reports.

"I think if they were to go down to the third tier of Scottish football then there would be huge implications for them. In that sense, I wouldn't like that to happen because Inverness are a big name within Scottish football.

"I don't know the ins and outs of it all, so it's not for me to comment but I wouldn't like to see them go down into League One.

"In the last few seasons they've been to the play-off finals and then the Scottish Cup final, so if they were to go down the season after that then it would be an absolute travesty. At times though, that's football. It's never plain sailing."

From a Ton perspective, Imrie says that achieving a fifth place finish would allow him to continue to try and achieve progress.

He added:  "I had two good years up there in Inverness where I enjoyed my football. I had some good times as well as some bad times, but all of that goes out of the window because I've got a job to do here and that's with Greenock Morton.

"I fight my corner for everyone here and do my best every single day for the club to try and make it better and move it forward.

"Inverness are needing a win to avoid the relegation play offs but they'll be coming up against a team who will be giving their all, which is always the case for one of my sides."
