A MURDERER was still on the loose on the streets of Inverclyde today.

A massive hunt is under way for the killer who gunned down two brothers in broad daylight in Lincoln Road, Greenock yesterday.

Robert Lennie (32), of Pembroke Road, Greenock, died at Inverclyde Royal Hospital yesterday afternoon.

His 30-year-old brother John, of Angus Road, who was also shot, remains in a very serious condition in the Southern General Hospital, Police were on the scene in Larkfield this morning in a bid to reassure the public. They stressed the shooting was an 'isolated incident'.

Chief Inspector Tom Doran said: `Everything is being done to find the man responsible for the shooting and bring him to justice.

`We have brought officers in from elsewhere in Strathclyde and I urge the people of Greenock that they should not be afraid to go about their daily business.` The shooting happened near a nursery and police have condemned the utter disregard for life to fire a gun with children in the area.

John Lennie was attacked in November 2004 with a sword and left with a broken arm. His brother was also struck on the arm with a sword during the attack.

Allan Docherty (27) was jailed for five years and seven months for the assault on John Lennie in April. His brother Lee (19) was detained for 17 months for striking Robert.

John and Robert Lennie appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court on 1 August charged with attempted murder and serious assault to severe injury and permanent impairment on two men. They made no plea in the private hearing and were released on bail.
