FOUR men charged with murdering Larkfield dad Neil Canney have been fully committed for trial following second appearances from custody at Greenock Sheriff Court.

Kieran Meechan, Jack Benson, Dale Russell and Martin McCusker are all accused of gunning down the 37-year-old at his home on Nairn Road on February 28.

Mr Canney was found seriously wounded at around 1.15am that day, and subsequently died in hospital.

Meechan, 27, Benson, 22, Russell, 28, and McCusker, 38, were locked up after initial court appearances last week — and all four remain remanded in custody today.

They are charged with discharging a firearm at Mr Canney, shooting him in the head and murdering him.

Meechan, formerly of Wellington Street in Greenock, Benson, of Crawford Street, Port Glasgow, Russell, of Glasgow Road, Wishaw and McCusker, also of Wishaw, made no plea during separate hearings in private this week.

It is alleged that they murdered Mr Canney 'while acting with others whose identities are presently unknown'.

Mr Canney was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he was pronounced deceased a short time after arrival there.

No-one else within the Nairn Road house was hurt.

Detective Superintendent Cameron Miller said after the incident: "Although we have yet to establish the motive for this attack, it does appear to have been a targeted incident.

"From our investigation so far we know that a number of people, described only as wearing dark clothing, turned up at the house on Nairn Road before Mr Canney was injured.

"It is then believed that the group dispersed towards Angus Road.

The next court appearance for the four accused men will be at the High Court, the date of which is to be confirmed.
