NEW Morton signing Jake Nicholson last night revealed how movie star Tamer Hassan helped engineer his move to Cappielow.
Nicholson is good friends with the English actor, who has had roles in Hollywood flicks including Kick-Ass and Batman Begins, as well as featuring in Brit films The Football Factory and The Business.
After the former Spurs midfielder was let down by agents and a plethora of broken promises, Hassan, below right, got in touch with an acquaintance, Alan Love, to try and help him get back into the game.
Love, agent of current Ton players Nacho Novo, Kabba-Modou Cham and Reece Hands, then approached Allan Moore about a trial spell which ultimately proved successful.
And a delighted Nicholson, who yesterday signed a deal that will tie him to the Greenock club until the end of January, hailed Hassan and Love for their part in putting his career back on track. The 21-year-old told the Tele: “I signed with Morton on Thursday afternoon — so happy days! The contract will run until the end of January. I was at Spurs last year but I was released at the end of the season after some serious injury problems.
“I went to Crystal Palace for a trial after that. I went in as a reserve player because of my age — 20, 21 — and forced myself into the first-team in a matter of weeks. Ian Holloway played me in a pre-season friendly, but they’d just bought Jose Campana from Sevilla at the time and wanted experience. So they didn’t take the risk; it is what it is.
“After that I had top agents from all around the world ringing and offering me this and offering me that. But it was all false promises.
“Agents don’t realise just how hard it is to get players into a club. Some of them are so far up their own backside that they think they can pull strings, but they go to a club and they can’t pull strings.
“It was false promises to me. It was false promises to my fiancée, false promises to my baby. It affected my future, my family and my life. You’re literally talking from July until November people have been messing me about. I’ve been really, really low but my fiancée has helped me and kept me on the straight and narrow.
“So after all that I’m just excited to have this chance to show what I can do with Morton. The move all came about through a movie star who a lot of people know, Tamer Hassan.
“I got introduced to him in the summer and he took a warming to me. He introduced me to people and put me in contact with Alan Love.
“Alan is a very influential man up here in Scotland, and he’s the first person I’ve got to give credit to. He put a plan in place for me and has done a lot for me in the short time I’ve been up here.
“He stated that there are no promises in football but said he was sure he could help and set up numerous things for me.” The first aim was to arrange trials for Nicholson in which he could showcase his talent in order to earn a contract.
He joined Ton for a training stint last week and impressed manager Moore enough to secure a short-term deal until the end of January.
He added: “The idea was to come down to Morton and see what happened. I’ve been here a week and obviously Moorey, the gaffer, liked what I brought to the team in training and signed me. Ideally I want to be playing in the [English] Premiership, but sometimes you’ve got to take a step back to get to where you want to get to.
“I just need to get playing football again, playing games and help Morton get back up to where they belong.
“I haven’t really had a pre-season or played many games, but if I’m selected to play today, I’ll give it my all and do my best to show what I’m capable of.” Nicholson and Hassan have built up a strong relationship since that introduction in the summer — and he hopes his famous friend will manage to get up to Cappielow for a game sometime soon.
He said: “I used to live in Essex and I was introduced to Tamer through a mutual friend. Tamer is like the king of Essex with his movies and stuff.
“He’s become an influential figure for me, trying to make sure I don’t waste my talent. He rang me just after I’d signed to see how I was getting on and to congratulate me. He’s a really good guy.
“We’ve become close friends and I’m going to dinner with him next week. I’ll definitely try to get him up to a Morton game, 100 per cent.”
