THE development squad rounded off their season in style on Thursday night with a 3-2 win over Airdrie at Cappielow.
It was estimated that Millen’s side wrapped up the title in front of a fantastic crowd of between 300 and 400 fans on Monday night.
And another healthy home turnout saw the Ton teens fall behind on 39 minutes to a sublime strike from Diamonds midfielder Conor McLaughlin.
Centre-half Luke Irvine, pictured, levelled things up 11 minutes into the second half, getting his head on Scott Tiffoney’s free-kick to steer the ball between the sticks for his first of the season.
Tiffoney’s set-pieces were proving difficult to deal with, and it was to his corner that Alex McWaters applied the finishing touch after Jai Quitongo had directed the flag-kick towards the target.
Airdrie substitute Aaron Ross looked to have salvaged a point with a searing angled strike that flew into Jamie McGowan’s top right-hand corner 10 minutes from time.
However, Ton subs Ben Eardley and David Anderson, both Under-17s squad members, combined to set up McWaters for an opportunity with five minutes remaining.
And the diminutive forward made no mistake with the finish, rifling a low angled drive into the net via the left-hand post to take his tally to 11 and close a memorable campaign in a fitting fashion.
Morton (4-4-1-1): McGowan; Hynes (Boag, 89), Mitchell, Irvine, Strapp; McWaters, Duffy (Eardley, 81), Langan, Tiffoney; Purdue (Anderson, 77); Quitongo. Subs not used: Connor (gk).
