MORTON secured their first away point of the season with a 2-2 draw against Cowdenbeath - but blew a glorious opportunity to grab a win.
Brian Graham gave Ton a 10th-minute lead but strikes from Marc McKenzie and Colin Cameron turned the match on its head before Allan Jenkins earned his side a share of the spoils with an equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
Peter Weatherson and Stewart Kean both missed first-half penalties as the Cappielow side failed to capitalise on the early sending-off of Blue Brazil goalkeeper David Hay.
A frenetic first half sparked into life in the seventh minute when Hay pulled back Graham after the goalkeeper had missed Craig Winter’s headed back pass.
Referee Stephen Finnie pointed to the spot and dismissed Hay, but Weatherson’s kick crashed off the inside of substitute goalkeeper Lee Wilson’s post and bounced away to safety.
But the disappointment was short-lived as Graham picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and smashed a shot into the net via a deflection to put his side ahead.
Cowdenbeath refused to crumble and snatched an equaliser in the 16th minute when McKenzie popped up at the back post to tap Craig Winter’s low strike into the net.
The pace was relentless and Ton came within inches of restoring their lead less than 60 seconds later.
Graham raced on to Michael Tidser’s slide-rule pass and rolled the ball past Wilson, but Scott Linton got back to clear off the line.
Cameron then emulated his team-mate’s efforts in the 21st minute by hooking Stewart Greacen’s goal-bound volley off the line after the big defender powered David O’Brien’s corner towards goal.
The home side were riding their luck at this point, but took a surprise lead in the 24th minute.
Lee Sibanda laid the ball off to Cameron on the edge of the box and the former Scotland internationalist marked his 38th birthday in style by superbly curling the ball into the top corner to make it 2-1.
There was no let-up in the action and Allan Moore’s men won another penalty two minutes later when Linton was adjudged to have pulled Weatherson to the ground in the box.
Stewart Kean assumed responsibility, but his weak kick was easily saved by 17-year-old debutant Wilson.
The visitors continued to force the play and Graham and Kean both went close before Jenkins finally equalised.
The former Stranraer man met David MacGregor’s long throw with a powerful left-footed volley which flew into the net off a defender to ensure the sides went in level at the break.
An exhilarating first half was followed by a surprisingly-flat second period in which neither side created a chance worthy of note until the closing stages.
The Ton faithful seated in the main stand thought their side had grabbed all three points in the 90th minute, but Kean’s volley had only rippled the outside of the net.
In injury time, Kean arrowed a drive inches past from 35 yards, then Weatherson nodded wide from close range in an agonising end to the match.
This was two points lost rather than one gained - but on the bright side, the point moves the Ton off the bottom of the table and up two places to eighth.
