MORTON 5 RAITH ROVERS 0 (Paartalu 14, Wake 55, 60, Weatherson 62, 88) JAMES Grady's assistant, Allan McManus, was understandably a very pleased man after this emphatic victory over Raith Rovers at Cappielow on Saturday.
He said: "I'm very delighted. We spoke to the boys at half-time and said that Raith would come out all guns blazing and we had to be ready for that and kick on.
"To be fair we came out and did well. Yes, they got a man sent off, but we were still very happy about how the boys were playing.
"It can become sloppy when it goes down to 10 versus 11 but I thought the boys were very professional. They moved the ball about really well and I'm delighted for every one of them because they thoroughly deserved that today.
"Peter [Weatherson] and Wakey [Brian Wake] have taken a wee bit of stick recently for not putting the ball in the net but we've reiterrated to them that we are creating chances in games and it would come for them.
"And all credit to them today, they were absolutely fantastic as was everybody.
"The key was to get the full backs on the ball and keep the ball moving quickly so they couldn't get near it. For the majority of the second half we did that." It was also satisfying for the management to see the team keep a clean sheet and McManus said: "We are delighted for Colin [Stewart] and the back four.
"You can see the quality of David Van Zanten and Alan Reid. I'm not singling them out, but for the last season and a half we have had no full backs and, for the way that myself and James are trying to play, it is imperative that we have good full backs and they bring a real quality to the side. I think that showed today. I'm delighted for Stewart {Greacen] and David [MacGregor] as well.
"They were very unfortunate last week with the goals we lost, so to get a clean sheet was great. I'm delighted for them." Peter Weatherson was also a very happy man after the match and said: "I'm delighted. It was five in the end and we could have had a couple more.
"They were down to 10, but a win's a win and that's the main thing. The first goal was a lovely ball from Stewart Greacen and I just managed to get a header back across and there was a good midfield run from Erik [Paartalu] and a good finish.
"The first goal I scored was a striker's dream - a wee tap into an empty net. I was delighted with that. I've not scored in a wee while so to get a couple was really good." There was a mention too for young substitute Ryan Kane who set up Weatherson for his second goal. "Young Ryan has been training with us and has done really well. He showed what he can do today. It was a great ball across and I managed to get my head to it and put it in the net.
"He showed great desire. He got to the line. He took a knock and managed to get back up and put in a good cross, so fair play to him. Long may that continue." And there was praise too for the referee in not whistling immediately for the foul on Kane and allowing play to continue. "Well done to him, because they can be quite happy with the whistle nowadays.
"That will help with the goal difference and confidence must be high. When they went down to 10 men I think we played really well, passed it wide and got crosses into the box.
"We'll take that confidence into the next match at Airdrie."
