MORTON"S two new floodlight towers will be up in time for their pre-season games at Cappielow, the club has confirmed.
Workers dug four-metre square pits at either end of the Cowshed during the week and work to fill them in with concrete started yesterday.
Once the work is complete, there will be a two-block concrete base in place for each of the 18-metre-high towers to sit in, taking Ton"s floodlighting up to SPL standard.
John Mitchell, the contractor carrying out the work, said: 'We will pour 25 cubic metres of concrete in by Monday. It has to be left for a time, but people will see the towers starting to go up very soon.' Meanwhile, plans for the new stand at the Wee Dublin End, bought from St Mirren"s old Love Street home, will be submitted to council planners as soon as tests are completed on the foundations.
The Tele can reveal the stand, which will have approximately 20 rows, should have a capacity of around 3,000 seats.
Mr Mitchell said: 'We need to do tests to check the bearing capacity, which will decide how foundation work is done, but we don"t need to change the slope of the terrace.
'We will be taking off the existing benches and removing the brickwork underneath each one.
'That will leave the steps, which fittings for the seats will be bolted on to.
'The back couple of steps will be levelled off and the roof will sit up above.
'We have all the seats needed and the stand should hold approximately 3,000 people once it is finished.'
