ENTERPRISING Gourock Primary pupils opened their very own cafe — and a lot of money is now brewing for a good cause.
Youngsters have set up their own business to help raise money for fellow students in Malawi and promote the ‘getting it right for every child’ (GIRFEC) ethos in Inverclyde.
Their new GIRFEC Games Cafe launched recently and went down a storm with parents, staff and invited guests.
As well as setting up the tearoom and serving customers, the pupils baked their own cakes which they sold alongside cuppas.
Guests also enjoyed having a go of a specially-designed board game created by the youngsters.
Moira McKay, deputy head teacher, said: “The launch café was a huge success and was attended by local businessmen as well as parents.
“The pupils also baked the cakes served on the day and the café will be held monthly for the foreseeable future.
“The initial funding to start up the café came from the pupils taking part in a local authority Dragon’s Den challenge organised by Robert Lamb from the council and supported by local businesses.”
All proceeds from the cafe will go to the school’s friends in Malawi.
The project impressed organisers involved with Gourock Primary’s African link-up.
John McIndoe, from the Malawi partnership, said: “It was great to play the game with a team of pupils full of enthusiasm and knowledge.”
