A DRIVER had a lucky escape after their car burst into flames on Greenock’s busiest road yesterday.
The motorist was forced to pull over on the A8 after smoke began belching from the engine.
The Fiat was left badly damaged by the fire, which happened around noon.
Greenock fire station crew manager David McGinley said: “A member of the public was driving along but had to park up on Rue End Street after a fire started in the engine compartment.
“We got called out about 12pm, it was only 100 yards away from the station.
“No-one was in the car when we arrived, the owner had already exited the vehicle.
“We opened the bonnet and put out the fire.
“The car is a write-off. It must have been very frightening for the
driver.”
