St Columba's School pupil has helped design Scotland's new baby box

Holly Hendry, 16, is delighted that her ideas were picked after she was part of a team which entered a nationwide Young Scot competition.

The Scottish Government's Baby Box contains a selection of clothes, as well as every day must-have items, like a bath towel, a travel changing mat, muslin cloth squares, a bib, digital thermometer and books.

Around 80,000 have been delivered to new parents since 2017.

Holly, who is hoping to study product design, said: "It all started with my tech teacher and I also thought it would be good to have on my CV."

Explaining the thought process behind the winning design, Holly said: "One of the themes was children's rights, the changing seasons and there is a family tree where pictures can be placed.

"There is also space on the front to personalise the box with hand and footprints.

"We chose to highlight Scottish inventors

"We went to Edinburgh for a session with graphic designers to help us create a design, submitted our entry and our design was chosen.

"It was a shock, I didn't expect it to be be selected.

"It's quite special to think of all the babies in Scotland receiving a box with our design on it.

"My family and friends said they were really proud to see me on TV, everyone is proud which is nice."

Scottish inventors are recognised on the box, with a steam train included to pay homage to Greenock's most famous son James Watt.

and landmarks such as Ben Nevis, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Edinburgh Castle.

Local MP Ronnie Cowan says he is delighted that a local student helped design the new baby box.

He said: "I have contacted the school to pass on my congratulations to Holly.

“The introduction of the Baby Box has been a great success and I’m sure the newly designed box will be welcomed by parents as they welcome their child into this world.”
