THE beleaguered Oak Mall has been given a boost with a new £500,000 store set to open next week.
After news of a succession of closures, it's been announced that a tenant has been found for the former Poundworld premises.
Bargain Buys are moving into the unit, with the store opening on Wednesday at 10am.
The chain describes itself as the UK’s leading multi-priced discount retailer and sells brand names at discount prices.
Bosses say they haves 'invested over £500,000 to enhance the shopping experience for all our Greenock customers'.
Bargain Buys has around 70 stores across the UK and is planning to open more over the coming months.
The Greenock shop will sell homeware products, as well as a wide variety of toiletries, confectionery, drinks and household essentials.
This store has recruited new full-time and part-time members of staff from the area.
Executive chairman Nadir Lalani said: “We are pleased to be opening a Bargain Buys store for the people of Greenock with loads of fantastic branded products, all at bargain prices, and look forward to opening even more new stores throughout 2019, creating over 1,000 jobs.
“The team is working hard to deliver an outstanding shopping experience, great service, and an enjoyable shopping environment for all our new customers.
"We are expecting massive queues for our opening day only specials.”
To celebrate the opening the store will be running a fun day with free family activities including an entertainer and game show-style contests with prizes.
The store is opening at an uncertain time for the shopping centre, which is set to lose long-standing tenants RS McColl and H Samuel the jeweller's this month.
The Telegraph recently revealed that the Mall has been put up for sale for £14m, after radical rationalisation plans to reduce its floorspace were rejected by the council.
It comes just five years after the centre changed hands for around double the price.
