A GREENOCK woman was taken completely by surprise when her husband bought her a SHOP for her 40th birthday.

Lynsey McMenamin is now the owner of her childhood favourite, McCormicks on Grosvenor Road in the east end.

She was stunned when hubby John surprised her with a store to call her own after she reached the milestone birthday.

The 40-year-old mum-of-three, who lives in Leven Road, said: "Not everyone can say their husband bought them a shop for their 40th birthday.

"I am so proud that I now own a shop.

"I had always fancied running my own place.

"It was a lovely surprise, I couldn't believe it."

With any plans for a party or getaway cancelled because of the coronavirus, Lynsey says she is so happy behind the counter.

She told the Tele: "I am really enjoying it so far.

"We used to live in the area when the kids were youngsters.

"We are both from the area."

The new business tops off a memorable time for the couple, who were married last year after 25 years together.

Lynsey, who has worked in cafes, and her daughter Chloe are busy taking over the reins day-to-day after former owner Michael McCormick decided to sell up.

The corner shop had been in his family for 52 years and he was delighted that it was local woman and customer Lynsey who took it on.

She and her husband decided to keep the McCormick name and they hope to continue the traditions of the business, which has been at the heart of the east end for generations.

Lynsey added: "It is a privilege to take over from Michael.

"Everyone loves him and I am hoping to keep all the McCormick favourites going,"
