A GREENOCK man called police to rescue him from a domestic situation with a woman — and was promptly arrested for breaching bail by being with her.

David Houston had been ordered to stay away from the female after being charged earlier this year with causing her to lose consciousness during an alleged assault to severe injury.

But he visited her at her Port Glasgow home before deciding that he had to get away from her.

He decided that the only way to do that was to alert the police.

Houston's lawyer, David Tod, told Greenock Sheriff Court: "He thought that the best way to extricate himself from the situation was to phone the police.

"He wanted to leave and she didn't want him to leave.

"The police arrived and informed him that he was in breach of his bail conditions."

Houston, 34, admitted the breach but denied allegations that he had behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting and swearing at the officers, adopting an aggressive attitude and making offensive remarks.

He was charged in January with seizing the woman by her hair, dragging her to the ground and swinging her across a room.

Houston was also accused of acting aggressively and shouting and swearing during an alleged disturbance at her flat.

Sheriff Joseph Hughes allowed him bail to an address on Greenock's East Shaw Street.

The case regarding the alleged verbal abuse of police officers is due to call again next January, ahead of a trial scheduled for February.
