NEW support groups are being set up in Inverclyde to help mums and dads who are struggling to cope with family life.
Mind Mosaic Counselling & Therapy say that they have identified a need to help new parents suffering through feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or negativity.
The charity aims to begin with online groups for mums and then dads of children from birth age to 18 months.
They will aim to give them a space to forge new friendships and support each other.
Susan Gray, development worker with Mind Mosaic, told the Tele: "Despite my children being older now, I remember how it was to have a new baby and all the challenges that came with it.
"There's so much value in having a strong support system.
"Due to the current situation with the pandemic, new parents won't be able to access all the usual help, or even from their own families.
"These perinatal support groups will hopefully help reduce feelings of isolation and provide a space where new mums and dads can support each other through the early months of a new child and just have a cuppa and a chat."
The eight-week support group meetings will run via Zoom.
It is hoped that members will continue with the new friendships made and keep up the connection.
The charity will launch the service this month.
Emma McKinnon, a cognitive behavioural therapist, says she will be able to bring her own insight and experience to the group.
She said: "I personally have been in the position where I've struggled pre and post-pregnancy with my mental health.
"I felt really detached after my first two children were born and I was quite overwhelmed.
"With my third pregnancy I received the support of the perinatal mental team through the NHS and had such a different experience.
"I felt so much better.
"That's why I know a group like this is vital in supporting new mums.
"It will allow them to feel like they are not alone and it will be a space to share their thoughts and feelings.
"We aim to support new dads too.
"Research shows 82 per cent of new dads are not asked how they're coping, so we hope to change that."
