A FIREFIGHTER from the Port Station is taking on a endurance challenge to raise money in memory of his uncle.

Sean Marner, 39, is running a 5k every day in February to generate cash for MND Scotland.

Sean's uncle John Crawford passed away following a battle with motor neurone disease around nine years ago.

The dad-of-two is hopeful that the money he raises from his challenge will help to fund groundbreaking research into the condition.

He set up a gofundme page online which has already raised almost £1,000.

Sean, who lives in Kilmacolm, said: "My uncle's passing really had an effect on the family.

"You hear about a lot of younger men being affected by motor neurone disease.

"It can affect anyone, from any walk of life.

"There's still no cure but there have been significant developments over the last couple of weeks.

"I'm hopeful that the money raised will help with the new research."

Sean has been out training since the start of 2021 - and he hasn't been short of volunteers to keep him company.

Friends and colleagues from green watch at Port Glasgow Fire Station, and friends he plays football with, have been running partners.

Sean, who turns 40 in March, said: "It's been great to have someone to run with every day.

"It really keeps me motivated.

"Getting out and about in lockdown is really helping people.

"I think people are finding things a lot tougher in the winter lockdown."

Sean also thanked his wife Karen and his children Paige, five, and Max, 10, for their support.

He has been using Kilmacolm's cycle path for his daily route - and is hoping that young Max will be his running partner on the last day.

Sean added: "The kids and Karen have been brilliant and have been encouraging me to go out for runs.

"I'm really looking forward to completing the challenge."
