A GREEN Party MSP wants the council to exert pressure on Strathclyde Pension Fund to stop investing in fossil fuels.
Ross Greer believes the fund, which administers pensions on behalf of Inverclyde Council, must end investments in oil companies.
He says the value of these investments collapsed between April 2017 and November 2020, but argues there is also an ethical imperative to end them.
Mr Greer said: “With the climate crisis now clearly on display across the world, I don’t think public sector workers want their pensions invested in the very oil companies causing that crisis.
"This money could instead be invested in building warm and affordable housing, like is normal for European pension funds, or in renewable energy, as other UK funds have done.
“Strathclyde Pension Fund needs to divest its stake in fossil fuels now and I hope Inverclyde Council will use its influence over the fund to make this happen.”
