A GREENOCK jail inmate who attacked a fellow prisoner to injury could be spared a further custodial sentence.

Michael McElhinny, 25, seized another man by the neck, punched him on the head and kicked him on the body on March 15 last year.

The sheriff court was told that he has not had any community-based sentence since 2013.

Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentence until March 3 for a background report and electronic tagging assessment to be carried out.
