A GREENOCK school has mapped out a plan to allow children to enjoy the great outdoors.

During the disrupted 2020-21 term All Saints Primary School kids have been taking part in a wide range of outdoor learning activities - such as orienteering, den building and mud painting.

Things are on hold for now but teachers and pupils are looking forward to resuming their fun in the fresh air once schools are allowed to reopen.

Teacher Marie Claire Davidson, who has been a Scout for over 20 years, has been co-ordinating outdoor activities since last August.

She said: "I've been working with youngsters in different classes throughout the school on various activities to allow them to learn independently and to work as part of a team.

"I've been in the Scouts since I was five-years-old, so I've learned lots of skills that I've been able to pass on to the children.

"Some highlights have included carrying out seasonal art using materials we've gathered in the playground, doing spelling and sums outdoors using chalk and map skills.

"A real favourite has been den building - the kids love that.

"We are very fortunate in that we have a nature trail that is enclosed within the school grounds, so we were utilising that a lot."

The youngsters have been outdoors learning regardless of the weather.

Primary seven pupil Louis O'Donoghue told the Tele: "We've been learning about nature and have been having fun doing things outside in the playground.

"My favourite thing was building dens."

As well as the activities that have been co-ordinated by Marie Claire, P7 pupils also worked with Learning Through Landscapes on an eight week project about nature and insects and they were able to plant an orchard of apple trees and moved logs to create new homes for insects and weaved willow trees into tunnels.
