INVERCLYDE'S MP has warned the UK Government that local parents will not be able to feed their children if a £20 uplift in benefits is taken away.
Ronnie Cowan has fired off a letter to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak setting out the challenges faced in the area in run up to the budget next month.
He wants the Treasury to help nearly 8,000 families here who are on Universal Credit.
Mr Cowan said: "In Inverclyde, there are 7,829 households currently claiming Universal Credit and the £20 uplift has been a real boost to incomes.
"It’s vital the UK Government extend the uplift and ultimately make it permanent."
The MP has also demanded an extension to the furlough scheme.
Mr Sunak will unveil the budget on March 3.
