ARDGOWAN Hospice staff are singing the praises of a local choir after they raised a five figure sum for patients.

Inverclyde Voices have handed over £10,000 from a string of successful online concerts and events.

The big-hearted bunch defied the pandemic for the compassionate place of care after it was selected as their dedicated charitable cause for 2020.

Despite none of the usual events in the calendar taking place, conductor Palma Allan MBE ensured that members have still been rehearsing each week and dedicating their efforts to fundraising.

Palma, who has been at the heart of the choir for over 15 years, said: "We had a whole year of activities planned but with the restrictions we had to change our approach.

"We've been holding online concerts and virtual choirs since March and we've probably been able to raise just as much virtually as we would've at our usual venues.

"That to me just shows the unwavering support for Ardgowan Hospice.

"They mean so much to so many and we are very grateful to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts.

As well as a rendition of 'Te Harinui' going global and reaching New Zealand, around 60 to 70 members of the 100 strong group have been 'meeting' each Monday online.

Choir member Katrina McLellan told the Tele: "It's been great keeping that wee bit of normality in our week by having the choir on Monday night.

"It's a chance to see each other and sing and while it's been strange, it is lovely to see everyone."

Palma says the get-togethers have also been an opportunity for those living alone to have some interaction each week.

She said: "While not all of our members participate in the online practices, many of our older members who live alone tune in.

"It's a great way for us all to keep in touch while we can't sing together."

Hospice fundraising officer Elaine McNeill said: "I actually felt a bit emotional when I found out how much Inverclyde Voices raised for the hospice.

"To still receive this level of support from the group during a time where they can't even meet is absolutely amazing.

"We cannot thank them enough and this money will be of great support to us as we continue delivering specialist care to our patients and their families."
