A GENEROUS Greenock DJ who has raised almost £100,000 for good causes has been crowned as a hero by the king of breakfast radio.
Stephen Connon, who has been running online raffles and draws since last May in aid of local groups and charities struggling due to the pandemic, has won an award competition run by Clyde 1 DJ George Bowie.
The station devoted a day to community projects which supermarket firm Tesco have supported through their 'Bags of Help' scheme.
They asked listeners to nominate someone who has gone above and beyond for their area.
Show producers were blown away as nominations flooded in for 32-year-old Stephen - with over 700 local people singing his praises.
Stephen, who lives on Brisbane Street, said: "One of the regulars on the page asked if she could post a link to nominations and soon hundreds of folk were messaging to say they'd nominated me for it.
"The morning it was announced on the radio my phone was going non-stop, it was crazy.
"It is so nice of everyone to think of me like that, I am so chuffed to have won.
"I've always had my doubters and people who think I do what I do for attention, but I put 100 per cent into my fundraising and just want to help as many people as I can."
Stephen has raised a remarkable £90,300 in 10 months and he is currently focusing on supporting youth uniformed organisations, as well as providing Ardgowan Hospice with a monthly windfall.
The dad to five-year-old Aubrie worries that kids are being forgotten about during the pandemic, so says he wants to help where he can.
He told the Tele: "It's difficult to try and explain to my wee girl what's happening as even we don't know, it's new for us all.
"Kids are suffering so much, so I've been helping the local uniformed organisations by donating money for them to buy activity packs for their members while they can't meet up."
The big-hearted fast food worker was commended for his community spirit and awarded £650 in Tesco vouchers as a thank-you from Clyde 1.
DJ George said: "Everyone at Clyde 1 was delighted to be involved in this campaign.
"Stephen was a very worthy winner and he has done some amazing fundraising.
"He is clearly appreciated by his local community in Inverclyde, as over 700 people nominated him.
"Very well done to Stephen and we hope he enjoys spending the well-deserved Tesco vouchers.
"Just think how many chocolate Easter eggs that will buy!"
