TWO musicical maestros used lockdown to fine tune their talents - then scooped awards for their polished performances.
Cornet player Lucy McAlees and bass trombonist Mark Gammon triumphed in their respective classes in Riverside Youth Band's fourth annual solo competition.
The duo excelled in the intermediate and senior classes and impressed judges in the contest, which could not be held in-person due to Covid-19.
A total of 27 performers went online to perform alongside recorded piano accompaniments and backing tracks produced especially for the occasion.
Lucy, 18, is head girl at Port Glasgow High and she hopes to study nursing after she leaves this summer.
She said: "I've been playing the cornet for eight years and it's something I really enjoy.
"It was a different experience having to record it and set everything up so it was correct, but I played one of my favourite pieces and I'm really glad it all paid off."
The competition was judged by tuba star and Besson artist Les Neish, who chose the award winners, offered useful hints and tips and chatted about his own musical journey.
Winner Mark, 18, also recently clinched a place on a prestigious music course at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
The Kilmacolm teenager said: "This past year has been a very difference experience for competitions, but I've still really enjoyed it and am delighted to have won.
"It was also great to hear from Les and get some valuable feedback and tips from him based on his own music career.
"My family are really proud of me and I wouldn't be able to do what I do without the support of my mum."
The Riverside competition was split into three classes catering for different levels of experience, with many other youngsters in the area being recognised for their talents.
The band's musical director Mark Good said: "Playing a solo takes some grit and determination.
"Recording a solo - and getting it just right - takes even more resilience, so I'm extremely proud of Riverside Youth Band members for rising to the challenge, as they have done throughout these challenging times.
"It was a pleasure to welcome Les Neish to adjudicate.
"Les is a world-class performer and educator and our members learned so much hearing what he had to say about the art of performance and his musical journey from his local band to the very top."
*Riverside Youth Band continues to welcome brass and percussion players, regardless of their level of experience. Email secretary@riversideyouthband.co.uk for more information.
