DOWN to earth nursery children in Greenock have been watching their garden grow - with help from some expert friends.

Tots at St Joseph's ended the term creating a community garden in their grounds, together with the award winning Inverclyde Shed team.

Volunteers from the group have shared their skills with the little ones in the nursery class.

St Joseph's senior early learning officer Laura Gallagher says they have big plans for their garden in the year ahead to complement all their outdoor learning.

She said: "We hope eventually to make it a community garden for our families to enjoy.

"The children love the garden and they get great joy out of it.

"We wouldn't have been able to do all this without the help of the Inverclyde Shed.

"They are brilliant and a great support to us."

Inverclyde Shed works to provide recreational activities to fight social isolation and loneliness.

It has gone from strength to strength since setting up in Captain Street, attracting a wide range of people from all walks of life with lots of different skills.

Retired nurse Margaret Moyse from Gourock has worked all over the world and joined the shed recently.

A passionate crafter, she wanted to learn more skills and found herself involved in all kinds of projects with the Shed.

She said: "When I retired I had more time so I joined the shed and I absolutely love it.

"It is great to be able to work with the little ones as well."

The St Joseph's nursery class opened two years ago to meet the demand of additional funded hours at nursery.

Five-year-old Leon Morrison is one of the kids to benefit from the all the outdoor learning.

He said: "We have lots of plants.

"We love watching them grow."
