WATER bosses have teamed up with Inverclyde MP Ronnie Cowan to try and combat litter louts at Overton.

The Tele highlighted the mess of discarded booze bottles, plastic and other debris which Mr Cowan and fellow volunteers found on a recent clear-up at reservoir 8.

Mr Cowan said: “People don’t discard rubbish like that at their own homes and properties.

“We know it’s only a minority of people that are responsible for the mess, most people of all ages respect public places but the behaviour of the minority continues to have a negative impact.”

Archie Macgregor, Scottish Water’s outdoor access officer, said: “Our reservoirs are among some of the most beautiful spots in Scotland and we encourage people to visit and use these spaces.

“But we’re asking everyone to respect, protect and enjoy these beauty spots. Littering is a criminal offence, but it is also an act of extreme selfishness by a minority who will visit, enjoy a place, then leave their mess so that no-one else can."

Keen environmental campaigner Mr Cowan added: “Leaving this litter is just so unnecessary. Bag it and bin it or take it home with you."
