A VILLAGE councillor wants a blanket 20mph speed limit introduced in Kilmacolm to tackle speeding.

Councillor David Wilson says he has been inundated with complaints from constituents about dangerous driving.

He contacted the council ans asked for work to be carried out to measure the speed of vehicles travelling on Port Glasgow Road, with worrying results.

Councillor Wilson said: "I arranged through our roads department for a speed measuring device on Port Glasgow Road, the A761, and the results were around 34.8mph which means a number of cars are travelling at significantly over 30mph.

"One of the biggest complaints from constituents is about speeding in the village.

"There is quite an elderly population in the village and over the last few years there have been more and more complaints."

Mr Wilson says that other places, including Bridge of Weir Road, Gryffe Road, Finlaystone Road and Lochwinnoch Road are similarly affected.

Now the council, in conjunction with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, are looking at the possibility of introducing a 20mph limit in the village.

Mr Wilson said: "This is something I welcome.

"We will be putting speed monitoring equipment in three of the hotspots, Lochwinnoch Road, pictured, Bridge of Weir Road and Gryffe Road.

"I have been overtaken in Port Glasgow Road while doing 30mph myself, so I've seen it at first hand.

"Police prefer to put in obstacles but that is not my view and not the view of the council - I think we should install the signage and then allow police to do their job to enforce it.

"I think it would be easier for police to monitor speeding at 20mph than 30mph per hour and word will get around.

"I am campaigning to set the speed limit at 20mph throughout the village.

"I visited North Berwick recently and all the roads there were 20mph.

"Eventually I think this lower limit will be uniform in towns and cities throughout Scotland."
