SANTA made an early visit to Port Glasgow to launch the festive season in style.

Youngsters from the town's primary schools were also in fine voice, singing some beautiful hymns to capture the true meaning of Christmas.

They were joined by the Salvation Army to make the light switch on ceremony extra special.

Depute Provost David Wilson said: "It was brilliant.

"When I thanked everyone for coming along I mentioned that it was the largest crowd I'd seen in the 15 years I've been doing the switch on.

"There was a great atmosphere - I think people were just happy to be out.

"It was an opportunity for parents to see their children perform as there are no school plays and activities on at schools."

Pupils from St John's, St Francis', St Michael's, Newark Primary and Craigmarloch donned their Santa hats to to spread some festive cheer.

Craigmarloch pupil Kayla Turner was chosen to do the honours by performing the switch-on.

They were all rewarded with selection boxes for their efforts while there were sweets for the crowd.

Cllr Wilson said: "The children sang three lovely hymns accompanied by the Salvation Army.

"The singing was fantastic."

Ward councillors Stephen McCabe, Jim MacLeod and Chris Curley also attended the lights switch on.

Councillor Wilson said: "It was a really good evening and we did everything in the open air.

"It kicked off the festive season in style and was well organised by the council."
