A YOUNG man had to be rescued from the River Clyde in Greenock last night.
The 21-year-old went into the water near to Customhouse Way around 10.30pm, sparking a major emergency alert.
He was helped by a lifeboat crew and taken into a waiting ambulance before going to hospital for treatment.
Sergeant Jason Logsdon of Greenock police said: "The incident was reported at 10.35pm.
"A 21-year-old male entered the water however was rescued by coastguard and taken to hospital whereby he was given appropriate medical treatment."
A coastguard spokesman added: "A male entered the water and was rescued by Helensburgh Lifeboat and handed over to the ambulance service."
