MSP Jamie Greene has demanded an urgent review into the decision to limit visiting at IRH to exceptional circumstances only.
The health board announced last week that visits would be restricted to those of an 'essential' nature - such as to those receiving end of life care - because of the ongoing high number of Covid cases.
Mr Greene says he has been contacted by a number of concerned constituents unable to visit their loved ones in the hospital.
He said: “Being in hospital can be a traumatic and difficult experience for patients and their families, so I have written to the health board asking them to urgently review this decision.
“Providing that visits can be done in a safe way, even allowing one visitor would bring huge peace of mind to so many patients and their families, rather than none at all."
