A PROUD grandfather is getting ready to baptise his grandson in the Port Glasgow church where he served for more than 10 years.

Reverend James Munro is delighted to have the honour of christening his youngest grandson nine-month-old Archie MacKillop.

Mr Munro, 74, who will lead the service, will be joined by his wife, Reverend Irene Munro, at Hamilton-Bardrainney Church for the service on Sunday.

The minister, who now lives in Ross-shire, has married his five daughters and baptised all his grandchildren.

He said: "I have eleven grandchildren, the eldest is 15 and Archie is the youngest.

"I've baptised of my grandchildren over the years and quite a few in Port Glasgow.

"It will be a great family get-together on Sunday."

Mr Munro served at the church for eleven years until 2013 and during that time he was also chaplain at HMP Greenock.

He and his wife have five daughters - Eilidh, Dolina, Ishbel, Anna and Kirsteen - who live all over Scotland.

Kirsteen, Archie's mum, lives in nearby Bishopton with her husband Alasdair and two older daughters Abigail and Flora.

They still attend Hamilton Bardrainney Church and she is delighted that her parents can officiate at this special day.

Mr Munro said: "It will be a big party, all the family will be there.

"The paternal grandparents, the MacKillops, come from Lewis but now live in Bishopton too."

The minister, who served with the Church of Scotland, has never officially retired and is still working assisting with parishes in the Highland District including churches in Conon Bridge, Knoydart Lairg and Ullapool.

When asked if he missed Port Glasgow, he says he feels he has 'never been away'.

He added: "Our family still have many friends in the parish and we are looking forward to Archie's special day."
