EXCITING new plans have been unveiled to create a mural reflecting the rich history of Gourock.

Iconic local landmarks will be featured on the public artwork, with a nod to the past to tell the story of the town.

The owners of the Cafe Continental are behind the idea and have put up sponsorship for the venture.

Together with this and grant aid, a sum of £14,000 will be used for the painting, to be located on the gable end of the busy restaurant.

Bill Regan, one of the proprietors, said: "The mural in Glasgow gets talked about and has brightened up the place.

"I think our mural should reflect Gourock's past glory."

He was joined in revealing the plans by fellow owner Gregg McLeod and Roland Toma, landlord, whose family founded the cafe way back in 1899.

Town councillors Ronnie Ahlfeld and Lynne Quinn are backing the idea to bring Gourock's history into the spotlight and say they are keen to get the wider community involved in the cultural Kempock Street idea.

Councillor Ahlfeld said: "This is a really exciting project, to recognise the buildings, locations, events and people who have shaped the history of Gourock on the mural is a brilliant initiative.

"We would like to involve our unique Churches & Schools Together group to organise a competition in our primaries to encourage children to propose what should be included in our historical wall.

"The team here have already suggested featuring the Granny Kempock Stone, Cragburn Pavilion, Bay Hotel, Gourock Pool and images of Gourock in wartime plus local events, buildings and people."

Mr McLeod is to hold a meeting with an artist to discuss the plan and take it forward.

Cllr Ahlfeld said: "It is hoped that costs will be sponsored privately, with additional grant aid, and already some funding has been committed for the project.

"We estimated it will cost somewhere between £12-14,000."
