THE Greenock Burns Club held a special fundraising coffee morning to raise funds for commissioning a coat of arms for the historic organisation.

The Mother Club doesn't currently have an official crest but members are hoping to can change that.

Isabel Lind, a Mother Club member who is spearheading the push for the new insignia alongside fellow member Alan Beck and soon-to-be president Jean Abdulrahim, told the Tele that the club was delighted with the turnout at the event.

She said: "Getting a coat of arms would be brilliant for the club, it's right and proper that such a historic club should have its own crest.

"We think it will cost about £2,000 for the coat of arms and the coffee morning will go a good way towards that.

"It was a great success, there was a really lovely atmosphere.

"We usually run our coffee morning in October, and that will still be on this year, but this was a special one just to fundraise for the coat of arms.

"We had a new stall this year too - Jean made jewellery and her granddaughter ran the stall.

"Our archivist had a stall where those in attendance could see what the Mother Club used to be like and the World Burns Federation were also represented.

"It was great to be back in the Town Hall and we were really pleased with how the day went."

The club estimates that through a tombola, the coffee morning and various donations it has now raised just over £1,000 of its £2,500 target.

They will also host a 'Blether in the Beacon' on May 19 and are planning on running a stall during the upcoming Meliora Festival.
