A HOCKEY open day proved a stick-on success as people of all ages turned out to give the game a go.

Greenock Morton Hockey Club hosted the day at Inverclyde Academy in a bid to encourage more people to take up the sport.

Club coach Fraser Melville arranged the event and said it attracted a healthy turnout.

Fraser said: "We had a whole variety of people show up for the men’s and women’s sections.

"There was a whole mix of ages too.

"The brilliant weather we had for it will have helped.

"We had quite a good turnout from current members of both sections, including our club captains and qualified coaches."

The day started with introductory sessions for beginners and some people were able to brush up on their skills.

Fraser said: "Two of the people who came along had already played for us in the past, so it was good to see them back."

The sessions included running through the basics of hockey, its rules and some light training exercises.

It ended with some short games which everyone enjoyed and the club officials were delighted when some people who attended turned up at their training session the a few days later.

Fraser said: "We hope the success of the open day will make more people interested in joining the club, so that we can get multiple teams on the go like we proudly did in the past."

Anyone interested in joining should email eve@mortoncommunity.net or message the club's Facebook page if they’re interested in taking up the sport.

The club is open to all ages and abilities.
