AN inspirational Gourock woman took the plunge with a charity event to help support others with multiple sclerosis.

Louise Newman, 62, who was diagnosed with the illness and forced to quit her job in 2011, held an afternoon cake and raffle event in aid of MS Society Scotland at Gourock Outdoor Pool.

Over the past decade since her diagnosis, the former Clydeview and Greenock Academy teacher has raised thousands of pounds for the organisation, with this year's event generating another £900 on the day.

Louise said: "I can't believe the success of this year's event.

"I did not expect to get that much in donations at all because it is such a difficult time for people just now.

"So many people are struggling, so to raise that amount of money in two hours was amazing.

"I want to thank everyone who came along and those that donated their time and items."

Louise's MS symptoms began with a loss of balance, before her vision started to deteriorate.

The money she raises goes towards crucial research into the complex neurological condition.

She said: "Research is so important.

"Often symptoms can be dismissed for something more simple, such as declining eyesight or age, so awareness is vital.

"When I retired because of my diagnosis, I knew I wanted to do something to help.

"It wasn't your usual retirement where there was a big party.

"I had just got my diagnosis so I thought I would do a fundraiser for MS Scotland Society instead.

"After my first event, so many said how they loved it, so I decided to do it again."

Louise and her fellow fundraisers had to contend with some nasty weather on the day of this year's benefit but it did not dampen spirits.

She said: "It was freezing and the wind was battering but everyone still had a laugh.

"There was a group of young kids all taking part in the raffle and a young girl with MS came along and had the best day - she loved all the cakes.

"All the people helping made it a great day."

Louise is still taking donations to go towards promoting the work of MS Scotland Society.
