A TOTAL of 25 new jobs will be created by the opening of a new store at the retail park in Port Glasgow.

Poundland is putting the finishing touches to its new outlet and has announced that it will open on Saturday November 12.

The company says the new store will bring shoppers 'more choice and value to help their household budgets go further'.

At more than 11,000 sq ft, it is almost twice the size of a typical Poundland and will employ 25 people, IN a mixture of full-time and part-time positions.

Darren Kay, the company's director of retail, said: “We’ve been looking to come to Port Glasgow for some time and we’re delighted to have found another great location in one of our heartland

regions.

“The new store has been designed to show off Poundland at its best and like all our stores it will offer amazing value to help our customers as their household budgets feel the squeeze.”

Managing the new store will be Kayleigh McCarn, who has been at Poundland since 2007 when she joined as a part-time sales assistant at the Greenock store in the Oak Mall shopping centre.

The new store will offer everyday essentials such as groceries, drinks and snacks as well as health and beauty, entertainment, stationery and craft ranges.

It will feature a dedicated PEP&CO clothing department with a range of clothing for the whole family plus a home section featuring cushions, throws, ornaments, plants and storage.

Poundland have been expanding across the country and the new store joins existing branches in Glasgow, Greenock, Johnstone and Paisley.

Port Glasgow is one of up to 25 new stores and relocations due to open by the end of the year.

The unit Poundland will take up was previously occupied by Watt Brothers.

It has been empty since Watt plunged into administration in 2019, after more than 100 years of trading.

All 22 of the Port store staff lost their jobs due to the department store chain's collapse.

The store had opened at the retail park in October of 2016.

Permission was recently granted for the final retail plot at the shopping park to be developed with a small new building, but it is not yet known if an operator has been lined up for that site.
