TRIBUTES have been paid to the session clerk of Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay Parish Church after his sudden death.
Alan Grant was a popular and well thought of figure in the local community and served the church for 38 years.
The 78-year-old recently passed away at home.
He was a loving husband to Ann, dad of Laura and Gary and a proud grandparent to Caitlin and Rebecca.
Alan was a former principal administrator at Inverclyde District Council, BB Captain at 1st Renfrew and a local JP.
Former church minister for Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay, Archie Spiers, today led the tributes.
He said: "It has been a difficult time and the community shares a deep loss that Alan is no longer with us.
"He was not only a big presence in our church and community, but central in the life of his own family.
"Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them. Alan was a devoted husband and family man who gave himself unselfishly to them and the life and witness of Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay Church."
Alan served as a session clerk for many years after being admitted to the local congregation in 1984.
Throughout his life he nurtured many young people in what it means to follow Jesus, firstly through the Boys' Brigade and then in the local Sunday school.
Archie added: "Alan saw the value in working hard and built a great career working in administration.
"His wise council was valued by all who knew him and his concern for his community always shone through.
"Alan was a rock to Ann, his son Garry, daughter Laura and as the family, grew to his grandchildren. They are left with so many wonderful memories of the times they shared together, how he loved being a grandfather and how he gave them such solid foundations on which to build their lives.
"He only ever wanted the best for his family and the church."
Alan was also a keen football fan and faithfully followed his team St Mirren through thick and thin.
Archie said: "It could not have been a coincidence at the time of his funeral service that St Mirren managed to beat Celtic. Alan was a dear friend to many and will be greatly missed."
His funeral was held recently at Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay Parish Church, where donations were given to Ardgowan Hospice.
