UP to 12 local jobs will be created when an established UK-wide pet shop chain opens a new branch in Port Glasgow next month.

The Tele can reveal that Jollyes - The Pet People have chosen Gallagher Retail Park in the town as the location for what will become their sixth store in Scotland.

Bosses say between 10 and 12 roles will be available in the store for people who are passionate about caring for pets large and small.

The store is earmarked for opening in unit 11 at the park next to the large B&Q store.

Bosses hope the store will be up and running by the end of February.

Jollyes was founded in 1971 and it now runs 80 superstores across the UK and Ireland.

Its stores provide food, toys and all the pet essentials, and staff are on hand to provide expertise and advice.

A spokesperson for Jollyes said the company was thrilled to be heading for Inverclyde and said the launch was part of a significant investment in Scotland.

They added: "We're excited to be opening in Port Glasgow – our sixth Scottish store.

"Last year we grew rapidly in Scotland by adding stores in Edinburgh, Glenrothes and Stirling to our existing stores in Perth and Clydebank, investing almost £1m in the country.

"We're looking forward to welcoming Inverclyde customers who are searching for everything from food and toys to bedding and accessories for pets of all shapes and sizes."

Further development work is planned at the retail park this year.

Permission was granted last May for development of its final plot.

A planning application seeking approval for a small shop on land at Ardgowan Street was approved by Inverclyde Council.
