A TRIO of young rugby players are set to star on national television after being chosen as mascots for Scotland's Six Nations super Saturday showdown with Italy.

Three lucky Greenock Wanderers players - Holly Murray, Connie Trayling and Eve Dunnet - will be walking out alongside the Scotland men's rugby team for their final game of the prestigious tournament.

They were thrilled when they found out the Scottish Rugby Union had offered the club the opportunity.

Wanderers president Kevin Murray told the Tele: "The girls were over the moon when they found out, all three of them have been going on about it constantly.

"They've been researching all the players since they were told and have had Flower of Scotland on repeat.

"I've never seen three girls so excited."

The girls are hoping they will get to stand in front of their favourite players before the clash kicks off.

Eve, who has been playing with the club for several years, says she can't wait to get to Murrayfield.

She added: "My favourite player is Duhan Van Der Merwe.

"I'd love it if I got to stand in front of him."

The trio will join the team during their walkout and the national anthems, and will also get the chance to get items signed afterwards.

Connie, whose favourite player is captain Jamie Ritchie, hopes to meet some of the Scottish stars before the match kicks off.

She added: "It's my birthday soon and my dad was going to take me along as a birthday treat.

"Finding out that I'm going to get to be the mascot has made it even better.

"It's going to be brilliant."

Holly says her friends were shocked when she told them she would be taking part in proceedings.

She said: "When my dad asked me I thought he was joking.

"I realised he wasn't and then I started jumping about.

"All of my friends at school have been saying 'wow, we're going to see you on TV'.

"It's so exciting."
