Prosecutors say McKillop proceeded to climb on top of him before allegedly seizing and compressing his throat.
She is said to have been in breach of an undertaking to stay away from the man at the time of the alleged assault at an address on Markinch Road on February 24.
McKillop, of Robert Street, made no plea during a petition hearing in private at Greenock Sheriff Court and was allowed bail.
The case has been continued for further examination.
