LITTER picking volunteers have collected 1,615kg of rubbish in Inverclyde since the start of the year.

Activist group Literati Guide to Inverclyde say a total of 211 volunteers gathered 322 bags at organised litter picks between January and March.

Organiser Vicky Cookson said: “It’s been fantastic to see over 210 amazing volunteers active in the last three months in the worst of our Scottish weather.

“They have lifted the equivalent weight of 14 adult bottlenose dolphins out of our local environment, reducing the impact on our local wildlife, the environment and our community."

The group is also hosting a number of events this month, and residents are encouraged to come along to take part.

A litter pick will be held at Lyle Hill on Saturday April 8 between 10am and noon.

Further events will take place on Sunday April 23 in Wemyss Bay at 10am and Inverkip at 1pm.

Giulia Canata of Literati said: “We would love to have you at one of our events. There are loads of benefits: making a real difference to our local wildlife, communities, environment, and doing some light exercise in a natural setting."

Fellow group member Louise Hunter added: “We’re proud of the efforts which our community are actively doing to make a real difference."
