A HIT podcast created by a tenacious Greenock student is pulling in big names and helping young people learn more about the highlights and pitfalls of the music industry.

Jack McAuley set up Jack Talks Music to tie in with his studies on the commercial music BA honours course at the University of the West of Scotland.

Jack, 22, planned and developed the whole 10-week podcast series himself and has managed to bring in a lot of well-known music experts who are sharing their experience.

Some of his guests so far have included Jim Prime from Deacon Blue, David Scott of BMX Bandits, and commercial music course creator Allan Dumbreck.

He also sat down for a chat with up-and-coming young singer songwriters Katelyn Baxter and Kate Kyle.

Jack says the podcast episodes have been racking up the views and he’s thrilled that people are tuning in.

He added: "The response has been really good.

"It’s been amazing talking to industry professionals who have all been there, done that.

"The music industry is changing every day.

"It’s been so inspiring hearing about what’s being done and what we can do in the future."

Jack did all the promotion for the show himself on social media and edited all of the footage.

At the start of the podcast project, he set himself objectives which included growing his social media following by 75 per cent which he’s already achieved, and generating more views and comments.

At the end of the podcast series, he’ll go back and reflect on the figures and evaluate what he’s achieved in the project.

Greenock Telegraph:

Jack said while he’s enjoying learning about every part of the music industry on the course, he’s gravitating towards the business side of things.

He added: "I’d love to get into managing bands and live events.

"I was lucky enough to secure work experience with DF Concerts last summer and worked backstage at TRSMT.

"It was amazing to see what a huge operation it is and I’d love to be involved in managing something like that in the future."

Jack believes he’s learned a huge amount making the podcast and hopes the series will inspire more young people to get into the music industry.

He added: "I want to help people understand that music isn't just about singing and dancing. There are so many more types of jobs you can do within the industry.

"Greenock is a great town and I'm very proud to have been born and brought up here.

"It has great venues and a brilliant music scene.

"If even one person from Greenock is inspired to get into the industry from my podcast, then it's worth all the time and effort."
