BOWLS club bosses have vowed not to let louts who tore down their newly installed electric fence deter them from doing their part for the local community.

Members at Port Glasgow Bowling Club were angered when they discovered that the club’s new security barrier, put up to prevent foxes from damaging the green, had been torn down just a week after being installed.

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident, which is believed to have occurred some time between 7.30pm on April 10 and 7am the following morning.

Club secretary Sandy Wotherspoon told the Telegraph that the incident was a slap in the face to the volunteers who had put time into building the fence.

Greenock Telegraph:

He said: “The most disappointing thing is that we try to be a community club, we’ve got a programme in place where we actually go into the four primary schools in Port Glasgow and encourage the kids to come and play.

“When folk try to destroy what you’re doing it makes it a very difficult situation for us, especially when you’re trying to help the community.

“We’re involved with the community so much at the moment.

“We let various groups into the club, we’ve taken part in Inverclyde Council’s warm hand of friendship and we’ve been doing as much as we can to make our facilities available to groups that help the community like St Andrews’ First Aid.

“We’re just trying to be a community club and when folk do something like this it knocks the stuffing out of us.

“I would ask the people who do this kind of thing to think about what they’re doing, especially if they’re local.

“We’re trying to good and I would encourage them to come along and take part rather than destroying the place.

Greenock Telegraph:

“We’re one of the premier clubs in Scotland and all we want to do is create a good space to play bowls.

“The guys had only put the fence up the week before and they were devastated when they came in and saw it knocked down.

“They had volunteered their own time and it was just gutting to see that happen.”

Despite the damage, the club has been able to repair the fence and restore it to working order.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing following a report of a fence being damaged.

"The damage is believed to have occurred between 7.30pm on Monday, 10 April and 7am on Tuesday, 11 April, 2023."
