A PROJECT worth £25,000 to enhance a beauty spot in Greenock has finally been completed.

Murdieston Dam has had a makeover with environmental improvements and new trees planted.

Benches and pathways have also been upgraded.

The finishing touch saw 150 metres of shiny new fencing installed.

Councillor Tommy McVey, who managed to secure the funding for the work from previous council budgets, says he is delighted by the end result.

He said: "This is the final piece of the jigsaw. The project started a few years ago but Covid interrupted its progress.

"I would like to thank officers and the residents committee for their input.

"We replaced the existing railings which were past their sell-by date, placed bins and provided new dog bins and planted new trees to replace those lost to Ash dieback disease."

Norman McNair, a long-serving member of Cowdenknowes Residents Association believes that walkers will notice a big change now that the improvements are finally complete.

He said: "What a difference it makes to the area. It makes it even more beautiful.

"People sometimes take it for granted because it is on their doorstep."

Councillor McVey says the determination to imrove the Dam showed the strength of community spirit in the area.

He said: "It just shows that the residents association take pride in their area. This can be seen in their monthly litter picks too.

"Murdieston Dam is a hidden gem in the middle of the town and it is now even better for people who want to get out in the fresh air and exercise.

"We have 10 benches around the dam for people to have a rest or sit and watch the world go by."
