A SIXTH man has been arrested as part of a murder probe into the death of Greenock dad Neil Canney amid a major armed police operation today. 

Gun-carrying officers handcuffed a 24-year-old man after swooping on a property at Stonehaven Road early this morning as dramatic scenes unfolded across the town. 

The raid was part of a series of operations carried out, with armed units also executing warrants at addresses on South Street and Burns Road in Larkfield.

The Tele understands that the activity was in connection with a murder investigation following the death of Mr Canney, who was found seriously wounded around 1.15am on February 28 at his home on Nairn Road in Larkfield.

He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

No-one else within the house was hurt.

Police say a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal regarding the latest arrest and that enquiries are 'ongoing'. 

Five men have already been arrested and charged with murdering Mr Canney.

Brendan Balloch, 23, Keiran Meechan, 27, Jack Benson, 22, Dale Russell, 28, and Martin McCusker, 38, have all been remanded in custody charged with discharging a firearm and shooting Mr Canney in the head.

Police Scotland confirmed that officers had executed three warrants earlier today and that a man had been arrested at a Branchton address.

A force spokesperson said: "Officers executed a warrant at a property in Stonehaven Road, Greenock, on Wednesday, 10 May, 2023.

"A 24-year-old man has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing."
