A GREENOCK woman has been awarded an MBE for her work to improve services for Royal Navy personnel with children.
Chief Petty Officer Miriam Charlton, who works at HMS Drake in Devonport, Plymouth, was named in the King’s first New Year’s Honours List.
In her role as the parent support information manager, Miriam is said to have made a ‘sustained and tangible’ improvement to the lives of service personnel with parental responsibilities.
She has also played a central role in developing and implementing parental policies and support structures.
She has dealt with many sensitive cases involving fertility treatment, adoption and infant bereavement.
Miriam, who attended Springfield Primary School and then Greenock High, was presented with her MBE by Princess Anne at Windsor Castle, watched by her proud fiancé Ian, mum Freda Savage, and children Amber and Cameron.
She said: “I feel extremely honoured and humbled to receive an MBE from His Majesty the King.
“The nomination and the award have come as a complete surprise to me.
"I am immensely proud that my efforts within the Personnel Support Group have been given recognition, and all whilst doing a job that I love.

Miriam says she will never forget her special day at Windsor.
She said: “The day was incredible, you are made to feel very special indeed, it truly was an honour to have my medal presented by my Commander-in-Chief and to share it with my closest family meant the world to me, a day I will never forget in a hurry.”
