THE Greenock Telegraph’s sister title has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Largs and Millport Weekly News is shortlisted for the Weekly Newspaper of the Year title at the Scottish Press Awards.

The paper - which took the runner-up prize last year - is up against competition from across the country, with the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald, the Orcadian, the Dunfermline Press, and the East Lothian Courier.

The judging panel for this year’s award was led by Richard Neville, former head of news brands at DC Thomson.

He said: “This year’s finalists demonstrated great skill and dedication and showed that the weekly market remains as strong as ever.

“It is never easy to whittle down the entries and my thanks go to the team of senior editors who performed this difficult task.

"The shortlisted titles all serve their readers extremely well and I hope all our finalists will be able to celebrate their achievements on the night of the awards whether they take the top prize or not.”

Largs and Millport Weekly News will also vie for the Local Campaign of the Year award on the night – a category in which they will compete with the Tele’s Line of Duty fundraiser for Ardgowan Hospice.

Their campaign focused on four-year-old Alara Kavak, who lives with cerebral palsy.

Alara was given the chance of undergoing a revolutionary surgical procedure which would allow her to take her first steps.

The newspaper launched an effort to raise £80,000 to support this.

The Scottish Press Awards will be held on Wednesday June 7 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Glasgow.
