AN investigation has been carried out after a child brought a knife into a Greenock PRIMARY school - but police say they were not made aware of the serious matter.

The incident happened at St Patrick’s Primary on Cornhaddock Street on Tuesday, the Telegrah can reveal.

This is the latest in a series of cases of a blades being brought into a local primary school by pupils.

It follows three similar incidents which took place at St Francis' Primary School in Port Glasgow - one in February this year, and two in late 2021.

The presence of the knife at St Patrick's went undetected until it was reported the next day and a probe was conducted.

A letter was sent to parents by the head teacher Kirsteen Doherty on Wednesday, after the investigation had concluded.

It read: “We received information today, Wednesday 17 May 2023, that a pupil had brought a knife to school yesterday, Tuesday 16 May 2023.

“An investigation was immediately carried out and the allegation was found to be true.

“All appropriate action has been taken by the school to ensure that the matter was dealt with swiftly.

“Nobody was injured, threatened or harmed in any way.

"The safety of our pupils is of paramount importance and appropriate action has been taken.

“I wanted to alert parents to the incident and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in helping to keep our young people safe by ensuring that all pupils understand the dangers associated with carrying knives.”

Inverclyde Council did not say whether police had been alerted to the matter and offered no further comment.

When asked, Police Scotland told the Tele that it was not an incident they were aware of.

All three incidents which occured at St Francis' Primary School were reported to police at the time.
