MY recent item about demolition in Greenock’s Trafalgar Street in 1975 mentioned one of the images was taken from the grounds of South Park Church.
Previously called the Mount Park, the church, pictured, survived for a number of years more.
Flats now occupy the site.
Shown today is another Trafalgar Street demolition scene from 1975, this time looking north to Regent Street. South Park Church stood on the south side of the tenement on the right.
In October, 1982, the Telegraph revealed that the congregations of the South Park and Mount Pleasant Churches were to merge, with services to be held in the latter’s Dempster Street building.
What was to become the Mount Kirk remains a place of worship.
More than half a dozen Presbyterian churches were once to be found in the part of town which includes Ann, Dempster, Lynedoch, Regent and Trafalgar Streets.
