THISTLE Theatre Company are returning to live performance for the first time in four years with a play close to their hearts.

The group are staging Our Day Out, about a school trip and penned by famous playwright Willy Russell, who is famed for hits such as Educating Rita and Blood Brothers.

Graeme Currie, a history and modern studies teacher at St Columba's High in Gourock, stars in the play.

He said: "It's a comedy set in Liverpool in the 1970s about a school trip to Conwy with the lowest performing pupils, who are really a bunch of misfits, some with poor behaviour, and it looks at the relationships between the teachers and pupils.

"Some of the teachers care about the pupils but others don't and have low expectations.

"It also looks at the attitudes towards poverty and the role of education."

Greenock Telegraph:

Graeme said: "I've absolutely loved rehearsing for this play.

"It's right up my street, so many issues come up in the play that are exactly the same issues as we see in school just now."

The production is very much a family affair with Graham's sister Lynsey Mitchell, a drama teacher at the school, directing the show.

Graham says that school dramas are pretty timeless and topical especially with a new series of a Waterloo Road, formerly filmed in Greenock, starting this month.

The play is being performed in conjunction with Thistle Theatre Academy of Speech and Drama and has a cast of 24, a mix of adults and young people.

It runs from Thursday June 1 until Saturday June 3 at The Albany in Greenock.
