TWO Greenock brothers have gone on trial before a jury charged with attacking a man in the town with metal poles and a bottle.

Christopher Rodgers, 40, and Gary Rodgers, 38, are accused of repeatedly striking the alleged victim on the head and body in a claimed 1am serious assault.

The man told the sheriff court that Christopher Rodgers came at him 'in full attack mode' after Gary Rodgers had brandished a knife at him.

He had gone to a house at Auchmead Road at 1am after receiving a phone call from his sister to 'get an understanding' of an earlier incident, the court heard.

The man said that Gary Rodgers stood at the door with a knife before his brother came out from behind him 'swinging' a pole.

He told the court: "He was aggressive.

"He told me to get away from his door and his behaviour was abrupt and challenging.

"I felt awkward and agitated."

Asked by prosecutor Raeesa Ahmed how he felt at seeing a knife, the man replied: "It made me feel annoyed and agitated.

"I said I didn't want any trouble but that I wasn't going away until I got an answer about what happened as I believed what happened was wrong."

He added that 'matters escalated quickly' thereafter.

The man told the court: "He [Christopher Rodgers] was in 'attack mode'.

"He came straight out of the door and outside the property and hit me on the head with something.

"I was dazed after I was hit on the head.

"I went into defence mode trying to defend myself and tried to punch him."

The man said that a member of his family tried to pull him away from the situation as had 'blood and a gash' on his head.

He told the court that the incident had continued for around ten minutes  before police arrived.

The man told the court that both Rodgers brothers were 'nowhere to be seen' after officers appeared.

The court was told that the alleged victim sustained a one-inch laceration to the left side of his head and was taken to hospital.

He also had swelling on his right forearm, attributed to defending himself, and bruises to his body, the jury was told.

Gary Rodgers, of Auchmead Road, is accused of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person fear or alarm, shouting and swearing, and brandishing a knife at the alleged victim.

Christopher Rodgers, who appeared from custody, and his brother are together accused of assaulting the man to injury by repeatedly striking him on the head and body with poles and a bottle or similar implements.

The alleged assault is said to have taken place in June 2020.

The trial continues.
